Standing before a strangely beautiful object, there is a moment when we must rely on sensual memory to find our footing and make order of what confronts us. We have a need to reconcile the odd with the familiar. This balance between visual attraction and disorientation intrigues me. My work in ceramics began with carving slabs of clay the way I had been carving linoleum, and evolved as I began to explore combining organic with inorganic forms in the Hybrids series, and with covering forms with bumps, speckles and patterns.
